The Parts of a Koshi Chime and Their Dimensions

1. The O-Ring

At the top is the O-ring where you hang the chime. Its diameter is 0.75 in / 2.0 cm

2. Top String

Below the ring is the top string, which is 3.54 in / 9.5 cm long. This connects the O-ring to the top of the bamboo veneer resonance tube.

3. Bamboo Resonance Tube

The main body of the chime is the bamboo veneer resonance tube. It is 6.29 in / 16.4 cm long with a diameter of 2.36 in / 6.5 cm. This is where the acoustic work happens the eight silver-welded steel rods are suspended inside, and the hollow bamboo cylinder amplifies and colours their sound. The eight rods are arranged around the interior of the tube and vary in length depending on the tuning.

4. Center String with Pearl

Running through the centre of the bamboo tube is the inner string with a pearl at its lower end. Please note that we did not measure the total length, just the part that comes out of the resonance tube until it meets the wind catcher. This string is 1.18 in / 3.0 cm long. The pearl strikes the rods as the chime moves, producing sound.

5. Wind Catcher

At the base is the drop-shaped sail, also called the wind catcher. It has a length of 1.96 in / 5.0 cm. This catches the wind and transmits the movement upward through the inner string to the pearl.

How much space do I need to hang a Koshi chime?

A Koshi chime hangs 40 cm / 14.17 in from top to bottom. You need enough clearance below the hook for the chime to swing freely allow at least the full hanging length plus a bit on each side. The chime can be hung from a standard ceiling hook, a doorframe, or a dedicated chime stand.

Do Koshi and Zaphir chimes fit the same stands?

Yes. Both Koshi and Zaphir chimes fit the same hooks and stands. The O-ring diameter is the same across both families, so any stand designed for one will work with the other. This means you can display Koshi and Zaphir chimes side by side on the same Zenmotion rotating stand.

Why does my Koshi chime need more wind than a Zaphir?

The wind catcher on a Koshi chime is smaller than the one on a Zaphir. A larger surface area catches more air movement, which is why Zaphir chimes respond to lighter breezes. Koshi chimes need a slightly stronger movement  either more wind outdoors, or a gentle hand motion indoors. Both chimes work well in sheltered indoor spaces when moved by hand.
