Yoga Chime Meditation: Koshi and Zaphir
Yoga is more than movement, it's a journey inward. Chimes like the Koshi and Zaphir bring something rare to that journey: with their pure, overtone-rich sound, they create a space of stillness within seconds, allowing both body and mind to let go. Whether as an opening ritual, a companion to individual asanas, or a gentle acoustic signal for the transition into Savasana, a chime is one of the most powerful and effortless tools you can bring to your yoga practice.
How to Use Chimes in a Yoga Class
No musical background required. A slow, gentle swing is all it takes to produce a tone that fills the room and draws everyone into the present moment.
At the start of class: A slowly fading sound tells every student: our time together begins now. The brain quickly learns to recognize this tone as an anchor. With each repetition, letting go of the outside world becomes a little easier.
During asanas: In flowing sequences especially, a chime can softly mark the rhythm or weave a meditative soundscape. Hold the chime gently in your hand and set it in motion during natural pauses, no rush, no fixed tempo. The sound follows the breath.
In Savasana: This is where a chime has its deepest effect. The gently fading overtones act like an acoustic blanket, deepening relaxation throughout the body. It's especially powerful to carry the chime slowly through the room so the sound reaches students from shifting directions.
As a breathing anchor: Let the chime ring on a long exhale and watch your students unconsciously align their breathing with the tone. This simple technique deepens belly breathing and calms the nervous system within just a few breaths.
Effects on Body and Mind
The pure, long-sustaining tones of Koshi and Zaphir chimes activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for rest and recovery. In a yoga class where that parasympathetic activation is exactly what you're aiming for, chimes complement the physical practice in a uniquely natural way.
Deeper relaxation: The slowly fading overtone sound gives the mind something to follow. As it listens to the tone, it releases. Thoughts settle, muscles soften, the breath deepens on its own.
Improved focus: A single, clear tone draws attention together. In yoga, this corresponds to the principle of Dharana, concentrated awareness as the gateway to meditation.
Grounding and presence: In busy group classes, many students struggle to truly arrive in the here and now. A chime creates acoustic presence in seconds, helping practitioners step out of the mental chatter.
Which Koshi Chimes Are Best for Yoga?
Koshi chimes have a warmer, more grounded sound and are available in four elemental tunings. For an active, movement-based yoga practice, two combinations stand out:
Koshi Aria, tuned to air, brings lightness and openness into the practice — perfect for heart openers, breathwork, and flowing sequences.
Koshi Terra has an earthy, centering quality that activates the root chakra and helps students return to their body after an active practice.
These two chimes complement each other beautifully, covering the full arc of a yoga class: from grounding and centering, through energizing movement, to deep relaxation at the close. Learn more in our article Koshi Aria and Terra Together.

Which Zaphir Chimes Are Best for Yoga?
Zaphir chimes have a bright, ethereal, airy sound. Their tone spreads wide through a room and creates a dreamlike atmosphere — ideal for deep relaxation, guided visualizations, and Savasana.
Zaphir Blue Moon and Zaphir Sufi are particularly well suited for quiet meditation sessions and deep relaxation.
For mindfulness training and guided body scan meditations, we recommend the Zaphir Twilight. Its balanced melody of low and high tones works holistically, inviting awareness both outward and inward. During a body scan, a single Twilight tone can act as a gentle anchor — drawing attention back the moment the mind starts to wander.

Chimes and Chakras
For those who want to weave chakra work into their yoga practice, Koshi and Zaphir chimes are wonderful companions. Each model carries its own vibrational quality that corresponds to specific energy centers of the body. Koshi Aria: The Chime for Yoga and Breathwork
For active yoga practice, Koshi Aria or Koshi Terra are excellent choices. For Savasana and deep relaxation, Zaphir Blue Moon, Sufi, and Twilight are particularly well suited. If you're starting with just one chime, Koshi Aria works beautifully for active classes, while Zaphir Sufi is ideal for meditative sessions.
Ring it at the start as an acoustic opening signal, use it to mark transitions, or let it sound during Savasana. Ringing on a long exhale is a simple technique that helps students deepen their breathing naturally.
Koshi chimes have a warmer, more grounded tone and work well for active sequences and breathwork. Zaphir chimes sound brighter and more ethereal, they're especially suited for relaxation, Savasana, and guided visualizations.
